Learner Drivers Scheme:

From 2018 the government will enable learner drivers to take to the UK motorways before taking their driving test. A welcome response from learners as well as driving veteran’s and driving instructors.

Although there is a scheme called “Pass Plus” government figures show that less than 5% of people take this option up. No motorway experience and a newly qualified driver can be overwhelming. Giving learner's the experience of motorway driving prior to exam’s can be vital; boosting confidence and safety for everyone must be a priority!

The conditions are very specific; learner drivers must be under the instruction of a qualified driving instructor and only in a dual-control car.

“Younger drivers are up to seven times more likely to be killed or seriously injured compared with drivers over 25, and lack of experience is an important factor” according to Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport.

Head of External Affairs at RAC Pete Williams welcomes the changes which will be implemented in 2018 saying “Giving learners the option to gain valuable experience on our fastest and busiest roads should further improve safety and enhance the confidence of new drivers”.
